What is an electric traction motor? An electric traction motor is a motor which has designed for high mechanical output power. The high power is achieved by high speed at medium to high torques. Traction motors usually spin at speeds between 10,000 and 20,000 rpm and have a nominal torque between 10 and 250Nm. While industrial servo or torque motors rely on permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) with surface magnets, traction motors rely on interior magnets. The reason for this is the centrifugal forces which occur at high speeds. Magnets that are bonded to the outside of a rotor hub can only withstand a certain centrifugal force. Therefore, traction motors rely on interior magnets. The magnets are placed in slots below the surface of the rotor hub. This holds them in place and counteracts the effect of centrifugal force. A comparison of different motor technologies can be found on this page.
MACCON designs and manufactures electric traction motors in the power range of 3 to 120kW. These motors can be operated from supply voltages between 24 and 600Vdc, depending on the available power source and output power requirement. The motors are high-speed PMSM, IPM brushless designs with embedded, interior-magnet rotors, which allow for field weakening over a range of 1:3. The stators can be supplied with water-cooling jackets in order to increase the continuous power rating. Typically these motors are integrated into customized mechanical housings together with a single-stage planetary gearbox with a reduction ratio in the range of 3:1 to 7:1.
Alternatively we can supply direct-drive outer rotor, rim-wheel designs, up to 15kW.
For certain applications (e.g. construction machinery, harsh environments etc) our reluctance motors are a good solution. Please have a look at the reluctance motors page here.
We also supply the In-Wheel hub motors of our manufacturing partner Printed Motor Works.

Changes at MACCON
To whom it may concern:
For various reasons, we have decided to merge the MACCON group of companies into one company. As of 01.09.2021 (current planning) the new company
MACCON GmbH & Co. KG
will be available to you as a your new business partner, with all rights and obligations of the previous companies. This change has no influence on our existing business relationship. All previous agreements will of course remain valid.
Unfortunately, this change requires some formalities that can only be processed sequentially. The local court (business register court) will formally publish various conversion steps. We ask you to wait until this conversion process is completed. We will inform you promptly about the completion of the conversion and provide you with all relevant company data.
We look forward to a continued mutually beneficial business relationship.
We thank you in advance for your patience.
